The most vivid memory I have of my grandfather is that he used to walk me to school. I didn't like to go (just like my father) so he would walk me to kindergarden at Clark school and pick me up there after class. I remember when he was sick and all his children would come to the house to see him in the evening. We children were not allowed to go into his room because we might disturb him. I remember sitting in the kitchen and his daughter, my Aunt Anna, making me something to eat. I didn't understand what all the commotion was about. Why was everyone here, and upset? Later in life I remember reading A DEATH IN THE FAMILY and having all this come back to me.

My grandfather lived upstairs from us on Concord and every day he would get dressed up (shirt and vest) and come down stairs and want to play checkers with me. I hated checkers but he loved the game. He would also go up to the corner store and visit with his friends.

My aunt Provie told me that during a visit to Hamilton, my grandmother, Mama Ann, was clearing away the left overs from dinner and couldn't decide whether to throw some food out or save it. My grandfather, Giovanni, told her, Anna, to save it. When it gets spoiled you won't feel guilty about throwing it out.

My sister Pauline said that grandpa use to talk to us in English. She remembers him telling her stories of Sicily but could not recall any. She said that she remembers him peeling an orange (or any fruit for that matter) in a continuous string. The orange peel he would then place over the stove so that the room would be filled with a citrus aroma.
