Update: 2008-12-18

Back it went…too noisy and vlan doesn’t work as promisied.  Internally, vlan is fine.  Can’t get any tagged data from outside in it visible though.  Going to put another HP ProCurve in…the 1800-24G now, after loving the 1800-8G…Only complaint on the 8G is the IP web interfaces disappears periodically…

Oriiginal …

After wondering which vlan capable POE capable switch to install for my home office, I finally went with the DLink DES-1228P.  Functionally, it’s everything I want.  The integrated Wireless control with their thin client AP looks promising too.  That said, it’s one NOISY unit.  Located in the basement, above my workbench, it’s louder than the furnace in the same room, even louder than the Dell 2800 server there, except when it power’s up, and that’s a close contest.

To put it in perspective, I’ve rubber mounted it to the ceiling (replacing the old 3Com 24 port previously there) and it’s loud enough to be clearly heard over the TV in the family room above, and the master bedroom can even hear it abeit barely now, one floor up from that.  Before the rubber mounts, it was clearly audible in the bedroom.  Forget watching TV in the family room too.

Now, I’m going to try a baffle or two to control the airflow and see if that makes a difference…stay tuned.
